The president of the Port Authority of Bilbao, Ricardo Barkala, has presented the 2023 Annual report of the Port of Bilbao, an exercise that closed in 2023 with a traffic of 32.8 million tons, which represents an accumulated growth of 0.11 % compared to 2022 mainly supported by liquid and solid bulk traffic.
The main projects for 2024 include the tender for the second phase of the central breakwater and continuing the electrification of docks so that ships can connect to the electrical grid and thus turn off their engines, which will reduce CO2 emissions. , noises and vibrations.

The first phase of the BilbOPS project, focused on pier A-5 of the Central Pier, was awarded in December for an amount of 4.7 million euros and has a subsidy of 4.3 million from the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism.
The BilbOPS initiative, which is expected to come into operation in 2026, requires an investment of 78 million, of which 14.2 million will be subsidized by the European Commission within the CEF Transport 2021-2027 aid program. The project involves 20% of the energy generated being renewable with the intention of rising to 50% in 2028.
