Melaka Port identifies location for ship refuelling tasks

The Melaka Port Authority (LPM) has decided that the port that is specific for bunkering (refueling ships) activities will be set within the limits of the Melaka Port in the Straits of Melaka with a diversion time of less than 30 minutes.

LPM chairman Datuk Koh Chin Han said the size of the area, adjacent to the main shipping route, is about 15 square kilometres with natural water depths of between 16 metres to 29 metres.

He said that the area would be able to simultaneously accommodate over 20 very large crude carriers for purpose of bunkering.

“This Specific area that is berthing bunkering tasks particularly for transiting ships passing through Straits of Melaka could be the to begin its type in Malaysia.

“The style of procedure and execution is comparable to those in Fujairah, Gibraltar and also the primary transhipment harbour situated near the primary worldwide delivery path,” he stated in a declaration right here on Monday (April 18).

He said Far East Bunkering providers (Melaka) Sdn Bhd (FEBS) have been appointed to deal with and handle the region skillfully.

He stated LPM had been dedicated to positioning Malaysia as being a location that is new bunkering activities.

Meanwhile, FEBS manager, Datuk Shahrull Allam Shah Abdul Halim stated FEBS had been devoted to trading as much as RM40 million in establishing the port that is specific.

He said this included setting up a Shipping Traffic Management System (VTMS), the mechanism for protecting the quality and quantity of bunker supplied, preventing pollution and oil spills as well as providing other marine services.

With the development of the area, he said over 100,000 passing through the Straits of Melaka annually would have an option to stop by to obtain offshore supplies.

He said they could also carry out all other additional services ship that is including modifications, overseas assistance and logistics solution in one single area.

In the meantime, Minister of Transport Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong stated he’s confident the region would develop into one of many bunker that is preferred in your community and would assist Malaysia increase the bunker and maritime companies.

He said it is because the precise bunkering activity port area, which will be situated in a strategic place in the center of the Straits of Melaka, possesses competitive benefit as being a one-stop center that draws transportation boats by satisfying each of their requirements.
