Japanese shipping mammoth Nissen Kaiun has signed up for more MR2 tanker newbuilds in South Korea.
Multiple brokers reported Nissen Kaiun had returned to Hyundai Mipo Dockyard for eight 50,000 dwt product carriers, paying just over $370m.
The ships, expected to hit the water in 2024 and 2025 will be Tier III and EEDI Phase 3 compliant. The low-profile shipowner now has 28 MR2s booked at Hyundai shipyards, according to VesselsValue data.
Last week the tanker sector saw the most orders with brokers at Intermodal spotting 22 vessels. Aframax/LR2 orders cover the largest portion of this year’s newbuilding activity where most recently the Greek owner Dynacom booked 10 firm and four optional scrubber-equipped 115,000 dwt tankers at Dalian Shipbuilding at $63m apiece.
