Sanmar Shipyards supplies the powerful and highly agile RAstar 2900SX tug to the South American tug SAAM Towage. The newly built ASD Z-drive tug, which its new owners named MATAQUITO ll, will be available in Chile.

MATAQUITO II is the fifth tug delivered by Sanmar to SAAM, followed by HALCON III, delivered to Chile in 2022, ALBATROS delivered to Peru and SAAM PALENQUE delivered to Panama in 2021 and SAAM VALPARAISO delivered to Panama in 2020.

MATAQUITO ll, based on the exclusive RAstar 2900SX design for Sanmar by Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd., is known as Bigacay XII while still under construction at Sanmar’s purpose-built, state-of-the-art shipyards in Turkey.

With 29.40 m LOA, 13.30 m shaped width, 5.50 m shaped depth and 6.30 m maximum operating depth, MATAQUITO ll is powered by two Caterpillar 3516C marine diesel engines that meet IMO Tier II emission standards 8010525. rpm./ min. The Azimuth Thrusters Twin Kongsberg US255FP achieve an impressive bollard pull of 80 tons and a free speed of more than 13 knots. The capacity of the tanks includes 160 m3 of heating oil and 18.6 m3 of fresh water.

With a crew of up to eight people, the tug benefits from a radically sponsored designer hull shape that has been proven to provide better escort towing and performance at sea. In addition to towing, the tug is also designed for firefighting, support response to pollution and rescue operations in the port.

Ruchan Civgin, Commercial Director of Sanmar Shipyards, said: “We are delighted that SAAM Towage has once again turned to us to provide them with the powerful, agile and highly manageable tug they need. At Sanmar, we are proud to be able to adapt the design, construction and wear of our tugs to the individual needs of the operator. We do this through close cooperation at every stage of development, from specification, through design and construction to marine testing. We also offer our customers unrivaled after-sales service. ”
