Last week Nikolas Tsakos-controlled Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN) put out a release that it had offloaded a debt-free elderly suezmax for $40m, the 2005-built Eurochampion 2004, to an unnamed buyer.
Now, the ice-classed tanker has emerged with its new name, Mianzimu, named after a mountain in southern China. The ship, entering the English Channel today, is registered with an unknown outfit called Reef Marine in the Seychelles.
The 165,000 dwt tanker is now classed in India and sailing with a tricolour flag in green, yellow and blue, flagging with the fastest-growing shipping register in the world, Gabon, a registry filled with ships from Russia’s top shipping concern, Sovcomflot, a flag that also houses many ships that used to be under Gatik Ship Management, once India’s fastest-growing shipowner and key mover of Russian oil.
The latest data from brokers BRS suggests there are a total of 675 tankers in what it terms as the grey fleet, representing 7.4% of the total global tanker fleet.
